More M

I found my inspiration for this letter page here.

To help motivate the writing practice (number 8), I placed a chocolate candy every few letters and she was not to teach until she had practiced writing the number. This worked well.

Then we were off to the grocery store where I promised her some M&M's when we got home if she could find ten 'm's at the store. Here's one. She eventually found all ten and was so proud of herself.

Here are some of the other activities that we did, most of the these ideas are from preschool palace:

Do a rhythm with a maraca

Listen, every time you hear an “M” food word say, “Mmmmmm.”: milk marshmallow bread m&m taco mint banana meat mustard salad macaroni peas meatballs apple melon mushroom juice mayonnaise

Play a Word Guessing game. Answers begin with the "M" sound. What is white, good to drink, and comes from a cow? _______ (milk) What does a cat say? _______ (meow) What day comes after Sunday? ________ (Monday) What does a cow saw? _______(mooo)
Song: Thank You Cows (tune: Mary had a Little Lamb)

Song: Do You Know the Muffin Man?

(Discuss how later you are making muffins. After singing this song, break it down: Muffin Man can be changed to Muffin Girl or Muffin Boy and Drury Lane can be changed to child’s address. Help teach/reinforce child’s address by changing song for each child’s gender and their street name.)

Math: Muffin tin sorting. Empty muffin tins can be used for various math activities.


1. Write numbers in each section and have child add that number of marshmallows or cheerios to that muffin section.

2. Line each muffin section with circular piece of colored paper. Have child add fruit loops or legos of the same color to each matching section.
#3: M&M graph. Write the names of the colors of the M&M’s across the top of a piece of paper. On the side of the paper write numbers 1-5 or 1-10. Let children fill in the graph accordingly with M&M’s
#4: Masking Tape M’s. Provide masking tape, safety scissors, and scrap paper. Show how to cut tape and place on paper in shape of letter M. Allow children to do the same.

Marvelous M

We made delicious muffins and then delivered them to her classmates (with their makeup packets) who were not able to come as part of our classwork.
These word windows are awesome. I found the idea on pinterest here, but did not want to pay for them, so I opened up my trusty computer programs and figured out how to make them myself. They were a lot of work, but turned out so well. What you cannot see in the picture is that as she keeps pulling out the paper (reading letter by letter) the last box shows a picture depicting the meaning of the word, so that she can check herself. Love these. I have the file if anybody wants to make some themselves.

I also made the good and bad mannered monsters that I found for free on this website. Abby and talked about what are some nice things to say and what are some means things. She then posted the monsters to the wall according to which category they belonged in.

As always, she does everything with a dramatic flair.

Then we moved on to coloring and cutting practice.

I was doing her hair as she worked on this project. It's fun to see her hair in stages throughout. She was so focused on this activity.

Preschool Again

This time I was in charge of introducing and reiewing the letter M. Abby helped with the preparation work. One of our student's names begins with M, so we labeled her carpet square for her.

Perschool arrived and both, BOTH, of her friends were sick and unable to come to both days of preschool that week. Abby and I had to learn about M by ourselves. Part of this included making a makeup work packets for the other girls.
I saw this activity at the lcoal Montessori schoool and then copied the idea by making my own at home. Abby loved it. She was mad that it only when to eight, instead of ten. I'm sorry, but I ran out of room.

Notice how precise her placement is. She made sure to match the  color and the position of the letter.

I saw this marshmallow painting idea somehwere, on pinterest. I had her paint with marshmallows and white paint.

Then we used the marshmallows and purple paint to practice the letter 'm.'

We used our moustaches tattoos from Santa.

We did this cool experiment with m&m's. The instructions were to place the candies (or skittles) in a bowl filled with water, making sure to place the letter m facing up. Then we left them there for an hour or so.

We learned that while the m&m's sink, the letter 'm's' will detach from the candy and float to the surface of the bowl. So fun and mesmerizing.

Crazy 8's

Abigail received these cards as a party favor from Lexi's birthday and she is finally old enough to play and understand card games. I am so excited for the possibilities. She is still a sore loser and does not want to play unless she is winning, but we are getting somewhere.

So cute together. Seeing these two brings a big smile to my face.

Free Play

I still like to take her to the local gymnastics center for open gym. She doesn't need me anymore there and she runs off and plays the entire hour. She is a blur for most of it and she thoroughly enjoys herself.

In January we spent lots of time enjoying all of Abby's fun Christmas presents. Here she is coloring in her purple purse book. She is very precise with her coloring and she will sit at this for hours.

We have not had any real snow hear this winter, so she opted to make an indoors snowman with the resources we do have.

She really enjoys practicing her writing in this book.

One evening, in an attempt to delay bedtime (a nightly challenge), she decided to dress up silly, and this is what she came up with.

My Birthday

I celebrated another birthday this year. Benjamin was a sweet husband and spoiled me all month. He even bought me the wheat grinder that I asked for, even though he doesn't like whole wheat.
He also played an awesome game of Scrabble with me. Look at how close the scores were. He let me win.
I love how we used the whole board on this game and how we did not box ourselves into a corner.

Benjamin and I made a carrot cake, from scratch, for my birthday. He and Abigail made the frosting.

Guess who did most of the work?
It was a delicious cake. I do love carrot cake. I miss Heyn's carrot cake ice cream from Iowa City. I tried to mix cake in with ice cream, but the effect was not the same.

We went out to lunch for my birthday. Abby made the letter 'A' with her silverware.She's always thinking and processing. I love restaurants that have coloring pages and crayons, they are true lifesavers.

I also asked for a girl's game night for my birthday. Several of my friends came and we had lots of yummy food. I made another veggie tray. It was so much fun and it was totally worth cleaning my house on my birthday. I love playing games.
I also love facebook for a birthday. I really appreciated all of the birthday wishes that I received over facebook. Thanks everyone for showing me love on my birthday.
