"They offer worship in a sanctuary that is a sketch and shadow of the heavenly one; for Moses, when he was about to erect the [tabernacle], was warned, "'See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.'" (Hebrews 8:6, NRSV)
This is talking about the Mosiac law and how it was a "sketch and a shadow" of the higher law that was to be revealed by Jesus Christ. Moses was given a "pattern" that he received "on the mountain" (which we often interpret as temple imagery in LDS theology). This implies that the Mosiac law was not an exact duplicate of the "heavenly" order, but rather the best approximation that Moses was able to give his people based on their culture, spiritual maturity, intellectual paradigm, and level of understanding.
Sometimes I wonder... to what extent is the Restored Gospel that we now have also a "sketch and a shadow" of the more "heavenly" order that awaits us? To what extent are the ordinances, structures, and organizations of the Church in our dispensation also only the "best approximation" that Joseph Smith was able to give to us based on our culture, spiritual maturity, intellectual paradigm, and level of understanding? This implies that there might be several more "layers" and "dimensions" of truth and understanding yet to come as we further progress and develop. We believe, after all, that the Lord will "yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God" (Article of Faith 9).
This possibility of further light and knowledge to come makes me happy.
